Plantar Fasciitis

City & Central London Acupuncture Service

Plantar fasciitis is a condition that causes a stabbing pain in the bottom of the foot, usually nearer the heel. The main reason we see this being caused is by overuse of the muscles, and weak feet, normally in runners.

What treatments we typically prescribe?

We would traditionally use two types of treatment for this, acupuncture and Moxa

About your Condition

It is normally caused by inflammation of a thick band of muscular tissue that runs across the bottom of the foot called the plantar fascia. The plantar fascia acts like a shock-absorbing bowstring. If tension and stress on that bowstring become too great, it can cause it to become inflamed and tight and can generate pain.

Symptoms

  • A stabbing pain in the bottom of your foot near the heel
  • The pain is usually the worst with the first few steps after awakening, although it can also be triggered by long periods of standing or rising from sitting.
  • The pain is usually worse after exercise, not during it.
