Acupuncture for Hormone Balance

Hormonal imbalance covers a wide range of symptoms – irregular cycles, PMS, hormonal acne, weight changes, low mood, poor sleep, low libido and early perimenopausal changes such as hot flushes. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the same symptoms can come from quite different imbalances. Finding your pattern lets us treat the root cause rather than each symptom separately.

TCM pattern diagnosis

What type of hormone balance do you have?

Most people with hormonal imbalance fit mainly into one of these patterns (sometimes a mix of two). Read the symptoms – which one sounds most like you?

1

Liver Qi Stagnation

肝气郁结
“Stressed, tense and up-and-down”
Tongue: Normal-coloured tongue, sometimes red on the sides, thin white coating
Pulse: Wiry

Hormone Balance: Symptoms rise and fall with stress: irritability, breast tenderness and bloating before the period, and a cycle that varies in length.

  • Mood swings, frustration or feeling 'wound up'
  • Breast tenderness and bloating before the period
  • Irregular cycle, often later when stressed
  • Tight shoulders, jaw clenching, frequent sighing
  • Hormonal spots around the jaw and chin
2

Kidney Yin Deficiency

肾阴虚
“Hot at night, dry and restless”
Tongue: Red tongue with little or no coating, sometimes with cracks
Pulse: Thin and rapid

Hormone Balance: Heat signs that are worse in the evening or at night, with dryness and poor sleep; common in perimenopause or after long periods of overwork.

  • Hot flushes or night sweats
  • Waking at night, restless sleep
  • Dry skin, eyes or vaginal dryness
  • Shorter cycles or lighter periods
  • Lower back ache, tinnitus or dizziness
3

Kidney Yang Deficiency

肾阳虚
“Cold, tired and low in drive”
Tongue: Pale, slightly swollen tongue with a white, moist coating
Pulse: Deep and weak

Hormone Balance: Feeling cold, tired and low in energy and libido, with long or late cycles; often linked with an underactive metabolism.

  • Cold hands, feet and lower back
  • Low energy and low libido
  • Long cycles or late periods
  • Weight gain and fluid retention
  • Frequent, pale urination
4

Spleen Deficiency with Phlegm-Damp

脾虚痰湿
“Heavy, bloated and sluggish”
Tongue: Pale, swollen tongue with teeth marks and a greasy white coating
Pulse: Slippery

Hormone Balance: Heaviness, weight gain and irregular or absent periods; this pattern is often seen with PCOS.

  • Weight gain, especially around the middle
  • Irregular or missed periods
  • Bloating and sluggish digestion
  • Oily skin or acne
  • Feeling heavy, foggy and tired after meals

Not sure which one fits? That’s normal – many people have a mix. At your first consultation we look at your tongue, take your pulse and ask detailed questions to confirm your pattern.

Treatment

How we treat each pattern

Your treatment plan follows your pattern – the same condition can need quite different treatment.

1
Liver Qi Stagnation肝气郁结

Acupuncture to move Liver Qi and calm the nervous system, cupping for tension, and a herbal prescription to smooth the flow of Qi. Stress-related symptoms and PMS usually ease within the first one or two cycles.

2
Kidney Yin Deficiency肾阴虚

Nourishing acupuncture to support Kidney Yin and clear 'empty heat', with a Yin-nourishing herbal prescription. Sleep and hot flushes are often the first things to improve.

3
Kidney Yang Deficiency肾阳虚

Warming acupuncture with moxibustion to strengthen Kidney Yang, together with warming herbs and diet advice. Energy and warmth usually return gradually over a few cycles.

4
Spleen Deficiency with Phlegm-Damp脾虚痰湿

Acupuncture, sometimes with electro-acupuncture and moxa, to strengthen digestion and resolve Damp, with herbs and practical diet and exercise advice. Results are judged over about three cycles.

What to expect

Treatment outcomes

For hormone balance, progress is usually judged over 2–3 cycles (about 3 months), although sleep, mood and energy often improve sooner.

  1. Weeks 2–3First improvements

Most patients start to notice a change within the first two to three weeks of regular treatment.

  2. Around 2 monthsBecoming stable

Improvements become more consistent. If treatment stops as soon as you feel better, the body hasn’t settled yet and symptoms can slip back to where they started.

  3. ConsolidateLock in the result

Continuing a little longer after you improve lets the new balance hold. Stopping at this point, symptoms are much less likely to return.

  4. ThenTaper off

We space sessions out and finish. You won’t need to rely on treatment forever.

Every case is different: some conditions are stable within 1–2 months, longer-standing ones can take up to around 6 months. We’ll give you a realistic estimate at your first consultation.

I had acupuncture and cupping with Emma, and she truly worked wonders on my back and neck. I came in barely able to turn my head, and now I feel so much better relaxed, pain-free, and mobile again. I’d had a bad experience elsewhere before, but Emma completely turned things around. Highly recommend!

I am very satisfied with the herbal remedies for perimenopause. I don't have hot flashes after the medication. And electric acupuncture soothes my plantar fascists on both feet. The capsules for bowel movement are working very well.
