RF Microneedling + Exosomes

Fractional radiofrequency (RF) microneedling combines ultra-fine needles with controlled heat to stimulate the skin’s own renewal, followed by a topical exosome product applied to the freshly treated skin, to help improve fine lines, texture, acne scars and skin firmness.

Background

Understanding RF Microneedling + Exosomes

  1. How Did RF Microneedling Develop?

Microneedling began as a way to create tiny, controlled punctures in the skin to trigger its natural healing response. Radiofrequency was later added to the needles, so that heat could be delivered to precise depths beneath the surface while sparing the outer layer. This allowed deeper treatment with relatively little downtime[1].

Our clinic uses the 3D Dermaforce fractional RF microneedling system, which uses ultra-fine, gold-plated microneedles designed to give precise, controlled heat distribution to the targeted skin layers. More recently, exosomes have been added to the treatment as a topical product applied after microneedling.

  2. How Does RF Microneedling + Exosomes Work?

The microneedles create micro-channels in the skin while delivering RF heat to the deeper layers. This combination triggers a wound-healing response that is associated with new collagen and elastin production[1].

Collagen and elastinHeat and repair are associated with new collagen, which may improve firmness and texture.
Exosome deliveryExosomes contain signalling molecules such as growth factors; the micro-channels may help them reach deeper into the skin.

Figure 2. How RF microneedling with exosomes is thought to work[1][3].

RF microneedling has been studied for acne scarring, fine lines and skin laxity, and is generally considered to have a good safety profile, including in darker skin types, when settings are chosen carefully[1].

Exosomes are tiny vesicles released by cells (such as stem cells, or from plant sources) that carry growth factors and other signalling molecules. Laboratory research suggests they may support collagen production and repair, but clinical evidence in humans is still limited. A 2026 meta-analysis reported improvements in wrinkles, texture and other skin outcomes, but noted that differing products and protocols limit how far the findings can be generalised[2], and a scoping review concluded that human studies on topical exosomes remain scarce and that products vary widely[3]. Results vary from person to person.

Your session

What you need to know

  1. 1Before your treatment

    What to Prepare

    10 days before:

    • Avoid aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (such as ibuprofen), fish oil, ginkgo biloba, St John’s wort and high-dose vitamin E, as these may increase the risk of bleeding and bruising. A regular multivitamin and paracetamol are usually fine if not otherwise contraindicated. Please do not stop any medicine prescribed by your doctor without speaking to them first.
    • Tell us if you have a history of cold sores (herpes simplex) on the face.
    • Avoid dental procedures and direct sun exposure.

    24 hours before:

    • Avoid alcohol, as it can increase the risk of bleeding and bruising.
    • Avoid waxing, bleaching, tweezing or hair-removal creams on the area to be treated.
    • Eat a small meal or snack before your appointment.

Please tell us if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a pacemaker or other implanted electronic device, have active acne or skin infection in the area, are prone to keloid scarring, or have used isotretinoin recently. Your practitioner will check that the treatment is suitable for you.

  2. 2During your treatment

    What to Expect

    • Your skin is cleansed and numbing cream is applied for comfort.
    • The 3D Dermaforce handpiece is applied to the skin in sections, with the ultra-fine needles delivering RF energy at set depths.
    • Most people feel warmth and light pressure or prickling.
    • The exosome product is then applied topically to the freshly treated skin.
  3. 3After your treatment

    Aftercare

    • Avoid heat exposure such as sunbeds and saunas for at least 5 days.
    • Avoid strenuous activity or vigorous exercise for 72 hours.
    • Avoid high-pressure activities such as diving and flying for 72 hours.
    • Avoid any other facial treatment or massage for 1 month, and dental procedures for 2 weeks.
    • No laser treatment for 2 weeks.
    • Use SPF 50 daily.

Redness, mild swelling and small marks are common for a few days. Pinpoint scabbing or temporary dryness can also occur. Contact us if you notice increasing pain, heat or signs of infection.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What are exosomes?
Exosomes are tiny vesicles released by cells that carry growth factors and other signalling molecules. In this treatment they are applied topically after microneedling. Research into exosomes in aesthetics is promising but still at an early stage, and human evidence is limited.
Does RF microneedling hurt?
Numbing cream is applied beforehand. Most people feel warmth, pressure and light prickling, which is usually well tolerated.
Is there any downtime?
Expect redness and mild swelling for a few days, sometimes with small marks or light scabbing. Many people return to work within a day or two, but you should follow the aftercare advice.
How many sessions will I need?
A course of treatments spaced several weeks apart is usually recommended, as collagen builds gradually. Your practitioner will suggest a plan based on your skin.
Are there any risks?
Common side effects include redness, swelling, tenderness and temporary marks. Less commonly, infection, pigmentation changes, cold-sore flare-ups or scarring can occur. Your practitioner will assess your suitability and discuss these with you.

I had acupuncture and cupping with Emma, and she truly worked wonders on my back and neck. I came in barely able to turn my head, and now I feel so much better relaxed, pain-free, and mobile again. I’d had a bad experience elsewhere before, but Emma completely turned things around. Highly recommend!
